About the Cherry Grove Community Association

The Cherry Grove Community Association, Inc. (CGCAI), a 501(c)3 (tax-exempt charity) organization, is an outgrowth of, and currently is the sole member of, The Cherry Grove Property Owners Association ( "CGPOA").

CGCAI has been formed to protect and advance the safety, health and welfare of the public in Cherry Grove, New York, while promoting a spirit of community and fellowship among Grove residents and visitors. CGCAI sponsors speakers and programs by agencies including The Fire Island National Seashore (FINS); The Town of Brookhaven (TOB); The Suffolk County Police Dept. (SCPD); The Cherry Grove Fire Dept. CGCAI monitors the use of the public dock facility which is owned and operated by the TOB. Used by ferries, private citizens and garbage removal services, the CGCAI advises the CGPOA of the community’s use of the dock, and the CGPOA advises the Town on the renewal, revision and awarding of franchises for dock use. CGCAI assists in locating individuals for the Dock Captain and Assistant positions required by the Special Dock District.

The CGCAI responds to situations and activities that threaten the community and its environs, as well as activities and situations that impact the safety and welfare of the general public in Cherry Grove. Working with other volunteer organizations in Cherry Grove, most notably the Dunes Fund, we cooperate with The National Parks, Fire Island National Seashore in response to its mandated parks and dunes preservation and endangered species programs. CGCAI voluntarily patrols the beach to protect nesting piping plovers, under the direction of FINS and Fish and Wildlife Service.

The CGCAI is the owner and administrator of the Community House where many of the programs and activities described above are held. A multi-denominational church holds services in the Community House, the Arts Project of Cherry Grove, Inc. (APCG), the Grove’s oldest theater company, stages its events there. The Suffolk County Police Department’s Marine Division has a sub-station at this location. The CGCAI provides its Doctors House property rent-free to The Elmer A. Lindsay Memorial Center, Inc. for its volunteer activities.

The CGCAI currently administers an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in cooperation with Suffolk County Vector Control to address the nuisance/health issue presented by mosquitoes and deer ticks (Lyme disease carriers).

Membership is available to all residents, renters, business owners, and frequent visitors to Cherry Grove who fully support the CGCAI's work and who may wish to participate in the CGCAI in the capacity of board officer or director, a member of a permanent and/or ad hoc committee of special interest to the member, and to vote on policy or to arbitrate in issues of concern to the CGCAI's members that involve the Cherry Grove community at large.
