Garbage / trash cans should be of sufficient number to accommodate everyone who lives in each house. All containers should have sufficiently tight-fitting lids to thwart deer that are world-class scavengers. Please call your landlord or your rental agent to obtain an adequate number of cans, or for replacement of damaged or missing cans. Please place garbage in plastic bags (available at the market) and secure the bags with ties. Under no circumstances place garbage in paper or plastic shopping bags outside garbage containers. Deer, dogs, mice and whatnot tear them open and scatter the contents. Dry trash (non-food items) that will not fit in containers, should be
put it in plastic trash bag, tied closed, and then placed alongside the
other containers. Landscaping materials should be placed in sturdy plastic bags. Tree trimmings and branches can be bagged or tied in manageable bundles. Don't throw them under the walks, on other people’s property or on the dunes. If apprehended by the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) police, you will be heavily fined. Tony's Barge Service picks up garbage and trash on: Tuesdays in spring and Tuesdays & Fridays until autumn. Call Tony's Barge Service (631-589-2130) to arrange for pick up of large or bulky items at your house. Septic Tanks: Sewage in Cherry Grove is not removed by the good fairies. Every house and establishment in Cherry Grove has a septic tank (a.k.a. ‘cesspool’) which must be treated with care if it is to work. Misuse = malfunction = unpleasantness and a call to the plumber. Do not put anything down the toilet bowl other that toilet paper. Items such as Kleenex do not degrade
